My Name is Ulysses Hsu

When I was eight years old, I had a friend who was battling brain cancer. He was being treated at Loma Linda Children’s Hospital, and fortunately won the battle and survived. I was extremely grateful to the Loma Linda team and the hospital. Inspired by his battle, I donated my birthday gifts and money to the hospital, sparking the creation of the Birthday Kids Club, an initiative encouraging children to donate their birthday gifts to support young patients in the hospital. The sense of community and support was heartwarming, as the nurses expressed their gratitude, calling the event a bright spot in the children’s day. To gather donations, I organized events with Loma Linda and inspired kids to give their birthday money and gifts to the Children’s Hospital. When the patients and children gathered around, their reactions were unforgettable—some clapped excitedly, others eagerly tore into their gifts, their laughter filling the room. Even though they were in the hospital, they were smiling ear-to-ear with excitement and joy. This experience fueled my passion for healthcare, and I want to further my knowledge in the future.

I AM HONORED. Through the support of the Loma Linda team, I was able to win the Youth in Philanthropy Award. I was nominated because of the creation of the Birthday Club at Loma Linda, fostering support for kids on birthdays to support other kids in need.

25th Anniversary Gala

I AM ASTONISHED to be part of The 25th anniversary of the Reflection Foundation Gala with over 1000 attendees. All funds will be raised for Loma Linda Children's Hospital Vision 2020 - a campaign to build a new Children's Hospital Tower and adult center, the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. It includes state-of-the-art surgical care space, including 20 new operating rooms. That night, we raised a record-breaking 2.35 MILLION DOLLARS (still unbroken).

2019

To support the fundraiser, I created homemade all-natural candles to sell, donating all income to Loma Linda Children's Hospital. I had the privilege of partnering with Big Hearts for Little Hearts, a compassionate organization that shared my mission. Together, we showcased these candles at their heartfelt events and vibrant farmers' markets. The experience was not just about fundraising—it was about illuminating the power of community and compassion, one candle at a time.

Vision 2020

BECAUSE OF YOU - Vision 2020 became a reality with the construction of a state-of-the-art pediatric center, featuring 20 new surgical operating rooms dedicated to life-saving procedures. In addition, $20 million was allocated to student scholarships. The campaign successfully raised a total of $476 million, making a lasting impact on healthcare and education.

I AM IN TEARS (happy tears).  Being a big brother meant having more responsibilities in taking care of my little sister. This sparked my desire to combine my love for science and reading with my passion for helping kids. I wrote and illustrated my first children's book to make science fun and interactive for kids.

I was invited to The Woodlands Signatures Event, where I met with various authors, presented my books, and sold them. This event also allowed me to connect with author and influencer Garden Marcus and poet and laureate Dede Fox, leading to exciting opportunities to record podcast episodes with them.

MEET AND GREET!

Signatures Event

Meeting and reading my books to 3rd-5th graders was an unforgettable experience. I shared the process of writing, illustrating, and publishing my book, giving them a glimpse into how it all came together. Teaching them science through my book was both exciting and rewarding. We ended off with a book signing and took an amazing picture.

Meeting the Senior VP of the Loma Linda Children's Hospital, Peter Baker, was a true honor. I had the chance to donate my books and the proceeds to the hospital, inspiring other kids to read and write more.

En España

I had the incredible opportunity to visit one of the oldest libraries in Salamanca, Spain, a place brimming with centuries of history and knowledge. During my visit, I donated my books, shared my love for literature, and had the privilege of engaging in Spanish conversations about the site's fascinating history. It not only furthered my understanding of Spanish culture but also inspired me to start translating my works into Spanish so others may experience them in this beautiful language.

Attending my second Woodlands Signatures Event was a deeply moving experience. The venue buzzed with creativity and energy, but the most heartwarming moment was meeting a bright third grader from my school—a fellow young author debuting her very first book. She shared that my journey as an author had inspired her to take the leap and write her own story.

At the event, I had the opportunity to showcase my third book, an exciting dive into the wonders of the universe. This book had been a favorite request from elementary and middle schoolers and seeing their eager faces as they explored its pages was magical.

I had the extraordinary privilege of sharing my children's books with the vibrant and resilient Taiwanese indigenous people. I also had the opportunity to share and donate some books to a local library in Tapei.
